The Price of Freedom by Vasyl Kazmirchuk follows Max, a recent Australian university graduate whose friends in a group called the Refusal have gained a fortune through a daring theft. Their newly comfortable lives come under threat when the group’s computer expert, Ivi, is seriously injured and strangers approach Jordan’s younger brother Caleb about an outstanding debt. The money demanded is beyond their reach, and a menacing visitor offers Max an alternative involving a police evidence store. Meanwhile, Victor De Bruyn, a wealthy fixer known as Concrete, summons the group to Belgium with another job. His promised reward is enormous, although the assignment concerns something called the Key, whose location remains a mystery. Caught between those demanding repayment and those pursuing the Key, the friends must decide how far their new fortune can take them.
The Price of Freedom by Vasyl Kazmirchuk is outstanding international crime fiction, and turns danger into a test of character. You feel that danger in a threatening meeting on a moonlit beach, then again when traffic lights black out across Washington. What gives those scenes their punch is the conviction behind the people facing them. Max has the sort of loyalty you can believe in, particularly when he volunteers for Ivi’s assignment. Ivi herself is wonderfully independent, standing her ground when Concrete questions her fitness to travel. Put those two up against Victor De Bruyn, a ruthless fixer who treats people as tools, and you understand why every encounter feels so dangerous. Even the surroundings have a palpable presence, with Baltimore’s working port made threatening by crane lights cutting through exhaust fumes. Readers who appreciate intelligent international crime thrillers, and fans of Evanovich and Goldberg's The Heist and Quirk's The 500, are in for a treat. Very highly recommended.
