Ann Fawkes’s Dark, Deadly Energy follows Aurora Kohl, a seventeen-year-old pilot cadet who dreams of joining Nexus and destroying the Energy Fighters responsible for her father’s death. Her younger brother Forrest, a gifted thirteen-year-old engineer, wants a future built around machines instead of the scars that make school difficult. Far across the System, the bounty-hunting crew of the Impulse chase criminals while hiding dangerous secrets of their own. When an Energy Fighter attack tears through Lispy, Aurora and Forrest are pushed into the orbit of Captain Jack Cazaar, his wife Sicily, inventor Albert, swordsman Cap, and the formidable Poe. The siblings suddenly find themselves aboard a ship where survival depends on people Aurora has every reason to fear, and where everything they have been taught about Energy Fighters begins shifting beneath their feet.
Ann Fawkes’s Dark, Deadly Energy has a universe built on an enormous scale, with the Impulse crew giving that scope a cast whose members arrive fully formed aboard ship. That feeling for people comes through in Cap, the ship’s swordsman, whose friendship with his formidable crewmate Poe has a rhythm entirely their own. Their history is right there when months of practice let the pair complete a blindfolded dance after the music disappears. The tech is a perfect ten out of ten, carrying those elements into places like the Impulse’s warp engine, where colors shift beyond human sight. There's also NewSKEN, a regenerative skin technology that belongs easily in that future. The best aspect of the world-building is the universe itself, the standout being Wikani, a remote water world where toxic purple seas surround an island settlement. Readers looking for superpowered space opera are in for a treat with this first book in The Dark Energy Saga series. Very highly recommended.
