Piecer Chase 523 feels that things are too good to be true as he and his classmates are about to receive their Piecer Stars at the final graduation ceremony of the soon to be disbanded Corp. As the big moment arrives in The Promise by Maxx Powr, the sky lights up and terror reigns as the Klix, an enemy thought to be peaceful, comes back to Earth in an attempted take over. Unsuccessful 20 years earlier, the Klix now have a new advantage they are happy to utilize to conquer the planet. Chase and the few friends who survive the graduation day attack band together to take on the Klix in order to save humanity. By finding some space ships with powerful worm drive engines and hidden supplies belonging to the Corp, the group does what they have been trained to do – fight for planet Earth. With good luck and pleasant surprises, they enjoy some success, but do they have what it takes to make the Klix give up planet Earth and the silver they so desperately need?
Maxx Powr has created a realistic future world in The Promise, where genetically engineered young men take on the responsibility of fighting for planet Earth. With interesting weapons and space ships and a variety of aliens to contend with, there is enough science fiction to please any fan. Well done, captivating and with some good surprises. Young adult readers will also be pleased with the camaraderie between the Piecers and their issues as young men thrust into a serious situation, one which they never expected to encounter. All in all, The Promise is well written with plenty of action, realistic dialogue and enough surprise twists to engage any reader.
