If you pick up The Second List by Max Bridges, prepare yourself for a roller coaster, wild, non-stop ride. Patrick Rooper, an ex-Navy SEAL writes for a Los Angeles newspaper. He’s approached by an elderly woman who asks him to recover a notebook buried in a cave in the Alps. This is the beginning of a story that began during World War II and continues to the present day. A quick trip to Switzerland before his upcoming wedding changes into a nightmare adventure when Patrick narrowly escapes a bullet on the mountainside. We travel back in time to wartime Germany and the race to find a train loaded with a precious secret. Susan, the daughter of wealthy art dealers, teams up with Patrick, and both become targets for a Japanese assassin working for a wealthy and powerful boss who will stop at nothing to preserve his criminal empire.
The Second List is Max Bridges' first published work and he has burst onto the literary stage with an amazing and breathtaking book. In my opinion, it is up there with the best; Daniel Silva, Lee Child, Vince Flynn, and Stieg Larsson. From the first page, the reader is whisked from California to Switzerland and then to Long Island and the scene of a double murder. Bridges then takes us to Poland during World War II to set the scene for the start of the events that follow decades later, moving from America to Europe and on to the Cayman Islands. The reader barely has time to draw breath as one scene follows another with cliffhangers that keep you turning the pages, and then the location moves yet again with more thrills and spills in store. For two days, I only stopped reading to eat and sleep. This is my kind of book and I can’t wait to read his next one. A well-deserved five stars. Highly recommended.
