Do you know the reason there’s no school on Memorial Day? In Remember Memorial Day by S. R. Murrell, children explore the answer to that question through rhymes and activities. They learn why that day matters and how families and communities remember fallen heroes. The story touches on visiting cemeteries, sharing memories of loved ones who served, attending parades, and observing a moment of silence. It also introduces the idea of sacrifice and encourages youngsters to think about the freedoms they have today. Each part of the story is paired with a sentence for young readers to practice writing and an illustration they can color. It concludes with questions, a research prompt, and opportunities for kids to add their own verse and drawings.
Remember Memorial Day by S. R. Murrell does more than explain this holiday. It gives children several ways to take part in what they’re learning. The rhyming text makes the information easy for young readers to understand while also supporting early literacy skills. I liked the writing practice, questions, and “Add Your Rhyme” section because they turn this book from just a listening story into an interactive experience. I’d love to share this with my kindergarten class because it could reinforce what Memorial Day means and why we observe it. I would read it to my students, then talk about the vocabulary and answer the discussion prompts. They could then decorate one of the included pages or create their own verse and drawing about this special day. The large, friendly pictures by J. Minaeva give kids plenty to color while building on ideas from the text. Parents and educators looking for a hands-on way to introduce Memorial Day should pick up this book. I believe it belongs in homes, classrooms, and libraries because it helps children explore, remember, and contribute at the same time.
