The Unknown Sun (Book 1 of the Destiny Series) by Cheryl Mackey is a young adult fantasy that starts with seventeen-year-old Moira. She's troubled by the accidents that took her family's lives. Moira knows more than most teens about death, having also cheated death twice herself. So when a strange boy starts talking too much about her past brushes with death, Moira takes it as an omen that a third attempt on her life is coming. Indeed, she is rescued by twins Belamar and Airi, who take Moira to safety. The twins are the winged heirs of Skyfall's throne, but Skyfall is dying now that the Immortals are missing. The Immortals once protected Skyfall but have been missing since the Great War.

Moira works with the twins to discover a journal that gives a prophecy. In order for the Skyfall to be saved, the Immortals known as the Unknown Sun must be released. But while Moira starts her quest to free the Immortals and the Unknown Sun, the boy from Earth continues to hunt her. The key might be in the journal, if Moira can figure out what it means in time to save this new world, and save herself.

This is a well-written, complicated fantasy story that fantasy fans will enjoy. The plot had good twists and turns to keep readers engaged, especially readers used to epic fantasy adventures. While the journey and plot were complicated, readers will be able to follow along and should enjoy the ride.
