This is a Cat! is an animal picture book for children, grades k-3, written and illustrated by John P Curtin, Jr. Who is that big, gray cat sitting so proudly in the middle of that easy chair? Why that would have to be Mr. Huggle. His human companion and Mr. Huggle have been the best of friends ever since Mr. Huggle was a tiny kitten. Anyone who has a cat or kitten in their lives knows just how wonderful, loving and mischievous they are. Mr. Huggle loves to eat, play and sleep. He especially loves being hugged and petted. He’s also quite a social butterfly who enjoys meeting new people. Think you know everything there is to know about Mr. Huggle now? Think again! His story will tell you quite a bit more about this most amazing cat.
This is a Cat! introduces kids to cats and kittens and gives them a humorous and insightful look at the complicated and discriminating feline. The illustrations are bright and colorful, and the images of Mr. Huggle are whimsical and endearing. I particularly like how the author shows how complex and multifaceted a cat’s personality is, and how important it is that their human companions understand their feline friend’s needs and likes. This is an excellent choice for parents and caregivers to share with a child when a new cat or kitten is being added to the family. Curtin makes it very plain that a cat is neither a toy nor a cuddly inanimate object, and he shows how the love a child gives to a feline friend will be amply repaid many times over. The language used in the book also makes this an ideal primer for a child to read on their own. This is a Cat! is most highly recommended.
