Thresholds is a captivating selection of twenty introspective records from the personal diary of Gerry van den Brekel, an experienced and dedicated Tibetan healer and talented author. These stories are written in unique, high-quality prose and describe how pivotal events in the author’s life guided their path. We learn about the impact of deaths, stillbirth, near-death experience, betrayal, breakup, marriage, divorce, severe illness, and recovery. We also learn about supernatural and spiritual manifestations, including communications with the dead, an occult ritual to open the door between worlds and hear other dimensions, Vodou spirit exorcism, an encounter with aliens, and the Kama-Sutra-triggered visions. Each story ends with thought-provoking questions inviting reflection on the unity of human beings with the universe.
Reading Gerry van den Brekel’s Thresholds, the author’s life story resonated with me from the outset, as I could draw many parallels to my own life. Comparing the author’s experiences with my own in the relatable episodes elevated my reading experience from pure passive information consumption to introspective reflection, and I am deeply grateful to the author for this valuable opportunity. Each of the twenty stories was fascinating in its own way. But most of all, I liked #17: The Skull because it surprised me with how a person’s skull revealed that person’s life, and #20: Death and Me, an Overview because it offered a relatable explanation of how the death of nearest and dearest affects chakras. I highly recommend this remarkable book to adult readers interested in spiritual and supernatural non-fiction and relatable, thought-provoking stories about the fusion of an individual’s life with the cosmos.
