Innovation moves companies forward and requires them to compete effectively. Robyn M. Bolton’s book, Unlocking Innovation: A Leader’s Guide for Turning Bold Ideas Into Tangible Results, illustrates this with a three-year model showing the characteristics of how innovation is introduced and grown in an organization. Each year has special characteristics with greater pressure and often fewer resources the later it gets in the cycle. The author breaks down three major categories within each year that affect its success—the ABCs of Innovation, as she refers to it. It breaks down to Behavior that takes place during the period, Architecture, including processes used, and Culture, which includes the interaction of individuals interacting with the established and changing culture of the organization during each period.

The author provides an excellent illustration of the ABCs as they relate to each of the three years, utilizing case studies as well as her own experiences. However, this is not just a book about other cases and stories, but one that the author asks the reader to use as a guide, write answers to questions, and develop an innovation plan that will move their organization forward. The author asks the reader to analyze the behavior, architecture, and culture to understand how they can move forward with innovation. The approach of introducing formal concepts, timelines, case studies, and asking the reader to provide their own answers in planning innovation makes the book a living document of great use to leaders in all organizations. There is an amazing amount of information that multiple readings may be needed to grasp. Unlocking Innovation: A Leader’s Guide for Turning Bold Ideas Into Tangible Results by Robyn M. Bolton is a practical guide to innovation in all organizations and is highly recommended.
