Until I Come Back for You by P.A. White is an unforgettable coming-of-age novel told through the eyes of a sharp, observant young girl, Patricia Anne—known as Trisha—growing up in 1970s Michigan. When her family abruptly leaves Detroit for a rundown farm in the countryside, Trisha finds herself in a world that is both unfamiliar and fascinating. The family’s attempt to live a rural life, complete with livestock, school transitions, and nosy neighbors, is full of comic misadventures and tender moments. At first, life in Pittsford, Michigan (shaped like a mitten, as the narrator sweetly reminds us), feels like a quirky adjustment filled with charm and growing pains. But the tone shifts when unsettling new neighbors arrive, especially the chilling Ronnie Clark. An undercurrent of tension begins to build, threading through the humor and nostalgia. The story masterfully balances laugh-out-loud moments with real emotional depth, all told with vivid, cinematic detail and a voice that feels both honest and deeply personal.
I was initially drawn to Until I Come Back for You by P.A. White because of its striking cover, which caught my eye even on a small screen, and I’m so glad I chose it. The storytelling pulled me in from the first pages with its humor, heart, and clarity. White’s descriptions are absolutely perfect. They created vivid visuals in my mind, whether she was describing her mother’s fitted polyester pants or the receptionist’s pin at the doctor’s office. I laughed out loud more than once, like when she said her dad seemed like someone in the witness protection program. But beyond the humor, this book resonated with me in so many relatable ways, from being told not to slam the door to the awkwardness of starting over in a new school. And just when you think it’s a funny, feel-good memoir, the presence of the Clarks creeps in and changes everything. Ronnie Clark genuinely gave me chills. White handles that shift in tone with incredible finesse. Until I Come Back for You is both a nostalgic joyride and an emotionally gripping read. I couldn’t stop reading until I reached the very last page.
