Wanderlust by Simon Foster is a crime thriller. Following the terrifying events of 9/11, Luke Bales is determined that his Australian bar in New York is going to be a success. Things are moving along nicely and the bar, called The Billabong, is doing very well when all of a sudden a fashion student disappears. She was last seen at the bar and Luke finds himself pulled into the mystery in a bid to save his license and to clear the name of his partner, Anchor. Luke sets off to follow a trail and finds himself embroiled deep in a quagmire of evil that may pull him in if he can’t solve the mystery in time. Can Luke save his bar and his friend from certain destruction?
Wanderlust by Simon Foster is a good book. It’s a well-written mystery that has clearly been thought out and is very clever. It is an action-packed story, dumping you right into it from page one and not letting you out until it’s all over. I love a good mystery, in particular, I like one that has been thought about and researched before it is written, and this fits the bill perfectly. The scenes in the book are described in such a way that you actually feel like you are there, living it, and the characters fit in perfectly. They are developed well, with enough information drip-fed to you along the way to let you get to know them, to get to know who they are, and what makes them tick. All in all, an excellent debut novel. I will definitely be looking for more from Mr. Foster in the future.
