Where Is Karl? by Karolis Vydmantas is about the immense struggles and wild adventures of a man named Karl. Moving to the United States as foreigners proved quite hard for Karl and his family, but they managed to get by somehow. He was introduced to drugs early in his teen years. Through this, he learned to attain freedom from the expectations and rules of his family by earning a bit of money to support himself, albeit knowing that he was doing wrong things. His small world slowly grew bigger along with his business. However, is this money worth it despite all the dangers and suffering being inflicted on the people around him? Join Karl in his wild adventures as he witnesses the deadly consequences of drugs.
Karolis Vydmantas’ Where Is Karl? is unique and well written. It perfectly explains in detail the struggles, the consequences, and the dangers of drug addiction or getting involved in drugs. For me, the story was so realistic that I felt afraid when some of the closest people to Karl died. It made me realize what a scary thing drugs really are and how bad the consequences are for dealing with these things. Reading the story until the end made me think of how tiring Karl’s life must have been, but he never gave up. He had been pushed down several times so that he almost seemed broken, but he always stood back up. His resilience is what amazed me the most in the story. To me, this book is quite effective in spreading awareness about drug safety. Great work!
