1-800-Laughing-Out-Loud by Chris Bent is a book of reflections on some aspects of today’s society, from serious subjects to some more trivial ones, all having in common the laugh-out-loud approach. The more serious topics cover politics and politicians, religion, world hunger, while the not so serious ones generally cover lifestyle and entertainment. The titles are intentionally deceiving as they don’t necessarily cover what you’d expect (e.g. Ice Water) and some are metaphoric (e.g. Modern Art). Some apparently trivial chapters are just a pretext to meditate upon more serious topics like good and evil, political correctness, free speech, or justice to name just a few. The book finishes with a Last Laugh and an Epilogue where the author explains his approach: “There is humour in everything, even when most everything we write about is serious.”

1-800-Laughing-Out-Loud by Chris Bent is easy and enjoyable, offering readers a good free time activity, whenever they feel they need to take a break from their daily routine. It is also a good reminder that sometimes it is better not to take things too seriously, and that there is humour in everything; we just need to see it. The chapters are short and well organized, and you can pick and choose which ones to read. The language is accessible to a wide audience as well as the topics, thus making the book relatable. I enjoyed the chapters about good and evil, as in between the humorous lines some universal truths are being touched upon.

Chris Bent has a mind unlike most of us. You would think that with his military background, his thought process would be regimented and restricted and predictable, but no , he has the most free flowing, and incredibly unstructured and creative mind that I have been blessed to be exposed to.
