In Chloe Sargeant’s The Timeless, eighteen-year-old Christa Malone is a first-year university student whose estranged father, archaeologist Dr. Richard Gale Malone, has returned after ten years away. Determined to learn why he disappeared, Christa follows him to a hidden mountain dig with her friends, where his research has uncovered a catacomb linked to stories of another world. An earthquake traps the group underground, placing Christa beside a mysterious key her father has spent years studying. What begins as a search for answers takes her far beyond the life she knows when the catacomb opens into Nova, a medieval realm shadowed by an old evil. There she meets Varon of the Daskan Forest, a young knight whose own history may connect him to the danger following her.
Chloe Sargeant’s The Timeless is an incredible portal fantasy with the kind of imagination that gets you invested in Nova from the outset. Christa has a funny, stubborn spirit that stays entirely her own when three-inch traveler Tippi leaves her baffled by her abilities. That tells you plenty about Sargeant’s character writing. Varon, the young knight beside Christa, brings a gentleness to their growing romance that fits naturally inside the adventure. Sargeant also gives Nova an ambitious sense of scale as Christa moves through cultures that feel distinctly conceived. Then you get those near-cinematic descriptions, which are where Sargeant really knows how to bring the realm into view. An ancient temple sits beneath forest vines, and Laelidon contains a miniature city beside its larger settlement for residents only inches tall. Readers who love portal fantasy with romance are in for a real treat with The Timeless.
