Árpád Váczi’s 2084 is a science fiction story set in a future world. Readers are taken inside a world where almost every part of human life is controlled. It does not matter if it is politics, surveillance, or technology; they all play a role in controlling humans. Programmer Stephen Egel is responsible for helping to create the very systems that keep society running. But when the truth comes out, his entire life is affected. Stephen, his girlfriend Michéle, respected scientist Professor Howard, and Admiral Ducaux are soon faced with a struggle that is much bigger than Earth. Governments seem to buckle down on their power, which could prevent new possibilities from happening. Readers are invited to follow these characters as they face the decision about what type of world they want.

In my opinion, 2084 is ambitious and thoughtful. I liked the blend of AI, space colonies, futuristic technology, and the action scenes. But I equally appreciated how Árpád Váczi gave room to focus on the people and ideas. Some of the characters who stood out for me included Stephen. He evolved from a programmer who helped create the systems to someone who began to question the systems. There was a good contrast between earthly life and the alternative vision that developed beyond Earth. I loved the survival storyline surrounding Michéle. I found Mihail’s character to be complex, but also one who had growing doubts. Mike was a brilliant but isolated survivor. Professor Howard was probably my favorite character. I found it fascinating that he received genetic enhancement and treatment to blur the distinctions between races. Admiral Ducaux was mysterious, but his visions challenged the status quo. Readers who enjoyed Kim Stanley’s The Ministry would equally enjoy 2084.
