A Strategic Painter: Mastermind Your Craft by Roopa Dudley is an educational book for artists, guiding readers through what it means to set up and then to own an artistic business. From ingredients that make an exceptional artwork to how to promote your art, the book is packed with valuable information for those who want to pursue this career. Having a Facebook page, writing a blog, taking professional photos of your paintings, having a sketchbook, joining art groups, and writing quarterly newsletters, the book teaches readers step-by-step strategies that can be easily applied to their own circumstances. The book is written from Dudley’s perspective as an artist which gives it authenticity and credibility.

As an aspiring artist myself, I enjoyed reading A Strategic Painter: Mastermind Your Craft. Not only does it give you valuable advice on how to establish yourself as an artist and how to further your career, but it also recommends art-related books, films and magazines that can broaden your horizons. The chapters are well organized around a main idea and the language is easy to understand. Dudley also talks about her personal journey into becoming a successful artist. I particularly enjoyed Roopa Dudley’s paintings, which show originality and illustrate the ideas in the book regarding colour, composition, medium, theme etc. I recommend this book to professional artists, art students, hobbyists that consider turning professional, as well as to art collectors and anyone interested in the arts. It is the kind of book that can be revisited any time throughout an artist’s journey into becoming successful.
