During her time in the hospital, the little girl goes through many different emotions. A Bump In My Road is an influential, heartfelt story introducing readers to many different emotions as well as explaining the concept of a positive mindset. Author Rosalind Abbott has shared with her readers a personal experience of her own childhood. Her purpose in writing this book was to help those in similar situations get through them in a happy and positive way. The author has achieved her goal with a well-written, easily understood text, combined with brightly colored illustrations, to excite and keep the attention of a young reader. A reader can expect to gain insight on how positive thinking and good moods can help improve your health when you are ill.
A Bump In My Road by Rosalind Abbott is a book that is truly an inspirational and enlightening read for those suffering from an illness. The author gives hope, a sense of love, and self-empowerment just by simply explaining that a happy mental state can equal a more comfortable and happy physical state. The step-by-step explanation of her own experiences put into the character of a little girl is welcoming and comfortable for young readers who are sick or know someone who is, thus making it not as scary. Young readers like to know that they share their experiences with others. The author gives readers the assurance that they are not alone. This book can be used as a personal read, in paediatric care units in hospitals or doctors’ offices, or even in libraries and schools as a reference and educational tool for a positive thinking mindset.
