In Alex Vandra’s Damián, a former CIA operative turned member of the elite Harknett 8 security agency, Damián Soto is a charming player who avoids commitment. When an old agency contact brings him a case against the world's most elusive trafficker, Elijah West, Damián infiltrates a masquerade gala where he unexpectedly collides with Oliver West, the crime lord's heir, who is followed by scandal. The twist? Oliver is the secret informant feeding intel to the authorities, and his playboy persona is a carefully built lie. The challenge is exchanging information under the watchful eye of Oliver’s murderous brother, Rafael, so the two agree to fake a relationship. What begins as a hookup leads to kisses, which lead to real feelings. Now Damián must face his fear of falling in love as Oliver risks everything to burn his father’s empire. What happens when Rafael discovers the truth?
What I loved the most about Alex Vandra’s book is how well it balances high-octane action and romantic suspense with the gorgeous writing, the sparkling dialogue, and the drama. The characters are finely drawn. Oliver impressed me the most; on the surface, he seems brave, but inside he is a desperate person bent on tearing his father’s world apart. His effect on Damián is spellbinding, and watching Damián struggle, torn between his desire for independence and helplessly falling in love, makes the story emotionally resonant. The author builds suspense with the alternating points of view, shifting the narration between the key characters. The pacing rarely lets up, moving from explosions and raids to suspenseful romance. The humor, the crackling chemistry, and the ingenious character work make Damián a feel-good, thrilling read.
