Musings of a Dune Thistle by Oscar O’Neill-Pugh is a refreshing book of mostly free verse poetry. It often uses the imagery of nature to paint a picture of universally true life lessons. Everything about the poems seems very intentional, from the way they are grouped in sections to every negative space on each page. At the end, there are even helpful notes about some of the poems so that they can be better understood. I read through the entire book in a couple of days, but I think the poems are best enjoyed when read slowly with time to contemplate.

Oscar O’Neill-Pugh has a fantastic vocabulary, and I enjoyed seeing such creative word choices. The author clearly poured heart and soul into Musings of a Dune Thistle. I can tell that deeply personal pain, love, and healing have been infused into every page. It takes a lot of courage to write that way. Some poems obviously spoke more to me than others, but Oscar is clearly a talented writer. My favorite poems were Roots, Clutching, to Grains Escaping, Albatross, Emerge, and Please Ask. I found these pieces to be the most relatable at this point in my life, and I appreciated the encouraging messages. This book is a perfect reminder to me that poetry is healing for the nervous system. I think I’d be better off in life if I put down my phone more often and picked up a book of poetry instead.
