A Gift From Grandma by Sarah Condie takes the reader on a delightful journey with Eve after her birthday, on which she received a beautiful, colorful dress. The main characters are Eve, her twin brothers Theo and Nate, a black lab called Luna, and school friends Peter, Sally, and Gloria. They all go on an adventure with this beautiful dress. It is a story that will help any child who has not been allowed to be themselves because they don’t fit, realize that they can be who and what they are. The ending of the book is delightful. Any child who is struggling with a learning difficulty will find this book an inspiration, and children dealing with doubt, bullying, and always being put down as not being important will also find it helpful.
The illustrations by David Anderson are simple and bring the story to life. The story gives readers the courage to accept their limitations, the courage to grow, and the realization that you can have fun with books, especially when so well illustrated that the images tell a story of their own. The fact that it is an interactive book and the reader has to find hidden objects throughout the pages makes it fun to read and full of laughter and joy. It is something to share with a special friend, a grandmother, a mother, or even a teacher. Thank you for writing and illustrating a book that will encourage all children to continue reading. A Gift From Grandma by Sarah Condie is a book that I will recommend to family, friends, and teachers.
