Daddy Loves Santa by Catherine Lanigan tells the story of two lonely souls whose paths suddenly cross during the holidays. At the heart of it is Rachel, a commercial architect who loses her creative drive and takes a leave of absence after her mother passes away. Hoping to rebuild Holy Redeemer, the church she grew up in, she puts together a festive bazaar and helps young Danny and Molly Sanders get lead roles in the parish Christmas pageant. That project introduces her to their father, Jake, a widowed supervisor who has shut himself off in bitterness while trying to sell his family home to pay off medical bills from his wife’s death. Things get magical when Rachel finds an old Santa suit in her attic and uses it to look out for the family. But can a few secret winter gifts actually help this fractured family?

Daddy Loves Santa gives a deeply comforting look at how much neighborly kindness matters. Catherine Lanigan does an amazing job with family dynamics, showing how Danny and Molly look out for each other during a huge life transition. The author builds a nice, steady momentum by merging simple moments of holiday magic with community effort, all beautifully leading up to the December events. Lanigan’s heartfelt writing style makes the church renovations and busy holiday markets feel very real and full of life. The core narrative stays strong from start to finish, proving that even a well-intentioned secret can cause complicated waves when a protective father feels his boundaries are being crossed. This delicate friction actually elevates the romance, adding a heightened layer of emotional stakes as Jake slowly learns to let his guard down and welcome unexpected support. It’s a beautiful shift, especially as we see that Rachel needs the warmth of his family just as much as they need her to help them heal. Daddy Loves Santa is the perfect winter read about how new beginnings bring healing.

Sometimes a little Christmas magic arrives when people need it most. In Daddy Loves Santa by Catherine Lanigan, Jake Sanders raises his two children, Molly and Danny, after his wife, Meredith, passes away. Grief has taken over much of his life, and financial problems only add to the pressure he’s under. Rachel Manning is struggling with a loss of her own after her mother’s death. An encounter at a donut shop brings the two together, although neither makes a very good first impression. Meanwhile, Rachel becomes concerned about the deteriorating Holy Redeemer Church and decides to find a way to raise money for repairs. When she discovers her late father’s old Santa costume, memories of her childhood return, along with something she can’t quite explain. Wearing the suit brings some surprises, and she begins using it to help the church and its community. Jake, Molly, and Danny soon become part of her plans as well. Can the magic of Christmas bring new hope to two grieving people and lead them to something neither expected?

Daddy Loves Santa by Catherine Lanigan blends romance, family, grief, faith, and just enough magic. I liked Rachel and Jake as a couple, especially because they didn’t immediately get along. Their first interaction had some conflict that added humor, and I enjoyed watching their relationship gradually develop. Molly and Danny were also a big part of what made the book work for me. They had distinct personalities, and their interactions with their dad and Rachel added both emotion and lighter moments. The magical Santa element was definitely my favorite aspect. It even reminded me a little of the movie The Santa Clause with Tim Allen, particularly in the way an ordinary person becomes caught up in something much bigger and more mysterious than expected. Lanigan’s writing was easy to read, and the pace moved well without feeling rushed. The novel is short enough to finish quickly, so it’s a good choice for someone looking for a seasonal story they can settle into without a huge time commitment. Anyone interested in a holiday romance with second chances, children, faith, and a touch of Christmas spirit should give this one a try.
