A Faithful Companion by Kasey Stockton is a delightful example of one of my favorite genres. Emma Darling was deeply in love with her neighbor’s nephew, Owen Buckley. When he visited his aunt and uncle in Derbyshire, he and Emma experienced an idyllic summer filled with love, hope, and promise for a future together. When Emma chose duty over love and agreed to marry the local baron to improve her family’s social and financial standing, Owen was devastated and immediately left for India as an officer in the British Army. Nine years later, Emma is still unmarried and now works for Owen’s aunt, Mrs. Buckley. Following the death of Mr. Buckley, Captain Owen Buckley has been summoned back to England for the reading of his uncle’s will. Will nine years apart have dampened the couple’s ardor? As with all good Regency romances, there is a villain in the picture who is determined to win Emma’s heart and marry her by any nefarious means necessary.

A Faithful Companion is a sweet example of Regency romance that I fell in love with instantly. Author Kasey Stockton has created a strong, independent, and yet deeply feminine character in Emma Darling. I loved how she had coped with the adversity in her life and how she was determined to make the most of her station in society, despite it being far from that which she had been raised in and taught to expect. There is something about this period of history, with its deep inequities between society and the general population, that makes for enthralling stories. The foppishness and frequent failings of many of the men in the Regency stories give the genre its charm, and the stoicism of the women, who invariably put up with their foolish men, always makes me smile. The opportunity for miscommunication in a world dominated by dictated manners of behavior, an inability to communicate directly and quickly, and the struggle to climb the social ladder and “rise above your station” make for a plethora of great stories and equally tortured romantic adventures. This book aptly fills that criterion, and I enjoyed it immensely. I highly recommend this read.
