Kingdom Keeper: The Remarkable Adventures of Odemog of Mazgamor by R.A. Dunne is the first book in The Chronicles of Mazgamor, a clean young adult fantasy. Odemog is no born hero, and becoming a Keeper was never something he wanted. But darkness is creeping over the kingdom of Mazgamor, led by the ruthless sorcerer Thane-Ra and his sinister partner, Morzan, and the royal family needs protecting. Fate has decided Odemog is the one to do it. He sets out with a band of loyal friends and warriors, plus a talking squirrel named Skeeter who has a talent for stirring up trouble. Their task is to keep the crown safe and bring the scattered forces of good back together before the shadows win. Can someone who never asked for any of this really be enough to save a kingdom?
Kingdom Keeper by R.A. Dunne is an old-fashioned fantasy adventure that’s easy to settle into. Fantasy fans will recognize the shape of the quest, but the author gives it enough personality to feel like fun rather than a rerun. Much of that comes from Skeeter, the talking squirrel, who gets a laugh just when the danger starts to pile up. Odemog is more reluctant than confident, so he’s easy to root for as he slowly grows into a job he never asked for. His friends matter just as much as he does. They’ve got a real bond, which gives the battles more behind them than swords and spells. Odemog finds the nerve to stand up for the people who need him, and friendship and loyalty carry a lot of the story. It’s a clean fantasy, so teens will enjoy it, as will adults who like a straightforward fantasy with a bit of humor. As the opening book of a series, it also leaves you curious about where Mazgamor goes next. Perfect for readers who like swords, magic, and a good quest with a bit of humor along the way.
