A Perfect Year? by Ruth Foster is part murder mystery and part humorous saga with plenty of sass. Ali and Caroline may live near each other in Upley Rising, but they aren’t friends. Ali spends her time trying to rear her many children while constantly fighting money problems, while Caroline lives a life of glamour, a life Ali would kill for. Robert, another neighbor, is perfectly respectable, but then his life goes in a direction he never expected. Every Christmas, Robert, Ali, and Caroline send letters to their nearest and dearest, detailing their lives since last year, and there’s so much to tell, but some things deserve special focus – a local murder mystery from years before, for one, and what on earth is going on at the summer festival? One thing’s for sure: it’s hard to know who to believe when everyone is saying something different.

A Perfect Year? by Ruth Foster is a hilariously unique story, a series of round robin letters written every year, a tradition that seems to have long died out. It will have you laughing out loud all the way through, and you’ll certainly identify with at least one of the main characters. All the characters are written as real people, and they definitely have very real behaviors, personalities, and flaws, thoroughly likable, if not the kind of people you'd want to spend too much time with. It’s a somewhat nostalgic story, heartwarming and packed with real insight into human behavior and emotion. If you want a book that will brighten up even the dullest of days or lift the strain just a little from a tough day, this delivers in every way.
