A Rainbow of Chaos: A Year of Love and Lockdown in Nepal is an insightful memoir about finding clarity and love during the COVID-19 pandemic. Louisa Kamal was stranded in Nepal, a striking and beautiful country that she had visited six times. Louisa and her Thai husband had been estranged for a long time, and Louisa wanted to free herself from the chains of her toxic marriage. At the start of the lockdown in Nepal on 24 March 2020, Louisa had her whole world turned upside down. Due to the many complexities of returning to Thailand, she could not be repatriated. Louisa found solace and comfort with one of the Nepalese “brothers” she met during her time in Nepal. Despite their age gap with Louisa being much older, she and her lover Arjun explored and developed a deep, lasting love for one another.
Louisa Kamal captures her mixed emotions of both highs and lows during her tumultuous year with resounding precision. The readers can share her struggles both internally and externally throughout A Rainbow of Chaos. Her story of finding love again in such an unpredictable and scary period of COVID-19 is inspiring and positive. She writes about the difficulties of her relationship with Arjun and the challenges they faced honestly. Another highlight is the text boxes interwoven in the narrative to introduce the readers to Nepalese customs, culture, and traditions. I was enthralled by the history of the country. The author helps readers understand Nepal and the culture at a much deeper level, which I truly enjoyed and appreciated.
