In James Young’s Time-Stopper, thirty-four-year-old David Preston is a Washington lobbyist with a secret no colleague can imagine: he can stop time. As everyone around him freezes, David can move through a silent city, giving him hours that pass as no more than a second to anyone else. He has spent years using this ability to stay ahead at Whitney Aeronautics, where his instinct for preparation already makes him exceptionally good at his job. During an interminable corporate training session, David slips outside ordinary time to solve a problem before an important date, showing how routine the impossible has become. Yet the episodes are happening more often than David likes to admit. When a tax proposal gives him a new professional ambition, his private advantage starts touching more of the life he has carefully arranged.
James Young’s Time-Stopper is incredible speculative fiction, with an impossible premise that settles naturally into David’s everyday life. David is a thoughtful character, always noticing something about the people around him. His connection with Julia has real sweetness, especially during their date on the Mall, when she accepts his carousel invitation with easy warmth. You can see exactly why these two people fit. Washington feels familiar through David’s routines, then Young lets the scenery take over in near cinematic fashion. St. Michaels appears beneath November drizzle. Western Pennsylvania arrives under snow as Christmas lights stretch across the resort grounds, with Fallingwater rising above the winter woods. Those descriptions have beauty that belongs completely inside David’s world. Time-Stopper brings imagination into every part of its setting, and its human side gives the premise real feeling. Readers drawn to heartfelt speculative fiction should pick this one up. Very highly recommended.
