Voices on the Wind -- Assault by Helena P. Schrader is an epic story of courage and defiance in the face of a relentless enemy and incredible deprivation. The first of a series based on the historic defense of the island of Malta by the British in World War II, this story focuses principally on the air defense of the island and the seemingly helpless airmen sent there to defend the island with minimal equipment and limited supplies. In 1942, the Axis powers controlled much of the Mediterranean and North Africa, but Malta stood alone as a proud British island that would not capitulate despite the endless bombing campaigns by German and Italian forces. Control of Malta would secure supply lines for Rommel’s Afrika Corps seeking to seize and control the Suez Canal and thereby the entire region. Newly married Wing Commander Robin Priestman and WAAF SigInt Officer Candice Weld have been sent to Malta to assist in the defense of the island. Flying Officer Ned Nettleton ended up on the island by accident when his Beaufort Torpedo Bomber was intercepted, shot down, and crash-landed on the island. Chief Officer Stevie Mackay of the Merchant Navy is heavily involved in ensuring British supply lines are maintained in the face of relentless German submarine attacks, aboard the cargo ship Clan Sinclair. Relationships are formed and courage tested in the white-hot cauldron of battle.
Voices on the Wind is not the first novel I have had the pleasure of reading from author Helena P. Schrader, or indeed one that included some of the characters involved in this story. For me, recognizing familiar characters, especially ones whose futures I had pondered in earlier books, gave me a sense of continuity and warmth. What I particularly love about this author’s work is not just her deep understanding of World War II history and the necessary research, but it is the focus she places on characters, their relationships, and their emotions. That makes her war stories so enjoyable; not only does she present the horrors of war and destruction so starkly, but she eloquently reminds us that the combatants are human beings -- fallible, capable of stupid or poor decision-making and that no amount of patriotism or bravado can truly hide the fear and despair during times of intense action and destruction. The story is told through the eyes of four different main characters, which definitely gave depth and understanding by allowing readers to delve into their minds, emotions, and decision-making processes. I also appreciate the author highlighting the class system in Britain at the time that virtually forbade anybody from rising above their birth status in life. The relationships between Stevie and Rosemary, as well as Ned and Candice, perfectly highlighted this straining social divide. Although World War I had affected the social structure of class society, it would be World War II that finally destroyed it. This is an epic story that completely captured my attention. I cannot wait for the next iteration of this amazing adventure. I highly recommend it.
