A Special Duck by Jeff Karena is a fun kids’ picture book. Jack the duck wants nothing more than to play with all the other ducks on the pond. But he’s different from all the others – his head is a different color, but he just wants to be accepted. He sits alone, watching, when a pair of geese lands on the pond. Gregory the goose joins Jack, and after a talk, he makes Jack see that by being different, he’s special. Jack gets the chance to prove himself with the other ducks. Will he succeed and be accepted by them?
A Special Duck by Jeff Karena is a lovely book that isn’t just a fun story. It also teaches kids that being different is nothing to be ashamed of and that everybody has something to offer. The illustrations by Lizzie Konetz are colorful, add an extra dimension to the story, and help kids see what’s happening. Books that offer a story and education are the best for kids, in my opinion, because younger readers learn more when there’s a story involved. The author has created characters with personalities that all children will be able to relate to on some level, and it should help them see that, just because they may look or be different from others, even in a small way, it makes them special. It will also help them identify where others are different from them and treat them with kindness and respect. I recommend this story, not just for children to read at home but at school, too.
