He has nine days to reach the city and complete the mission, and day by day, starting with a parachute drop into a dangerous jungle, a trek past crocodiles, and the crossing of a city torn apart by war, he must get close to the president and determine whether to kill him or not. Is killing the president the right call, and can he accomplish this mission with the odds stacked against him?
Sebastian is compelling, haunted by a childhood tragedy and a lost love he has mourned for two decades. His pain has helped shape his moral compass. He is unlike most assassins: archetypal and your perfect gray hero. The story grows in suspense as you race through the chapters with each action-packed day, but Mark Berry leavens it with tender moments like the unexpected entanglement with a hotel worker called Juliette. The writing is largely descriptive and captures the action and imagery. The story spans nine days, and each one adds a new level of conflict while raising the odds for Sebastian. The deliberate pacing is filled with streams of consciousness and extended flashbacks. On the Ninth Day is perfect for fans of character-driven thrillers with heart; it is an absorbing, memorable read.
