It is difficult not to be intrigued by the predicament that Mason, the main protagonist in A Tale of Moral Corruption by Marsha Cornelius, finds himself in. This is in an era when women have taken over the world and having a boy in the family is almost tantamount to failure. The 28-year-old Mason has one big ambition in life and that is to find a beautiful and successful wife, and to be able to wear an artificial womb and take care of their children at home. He’s on the Approved Partner Registry, a website used by successful women who don’t have the time or penchant for dating. While he waits for his dream of a woman, he works as a tax clerk where he meets Irina, but she has other plans in life. In trying to please her, he does something that costs him his job and he plunges into a series of misfortunes until he faces a certain, barbaric death.
As the novel opens, author Marsha Cornelius centers on the young man, Mason, who contemplates the fate of an office mate who has once paraded the artificial womb strapped to his belly, insisting that it is a girl. As it turns out, to the deep disappointment of the parents the baby is a boy. This situates the tone of the story and, as Mason sets out to make his dream of domestic bliss a reality, we learn about a society that is seemingly designed as a paradox to the one we live in. Determined to perform the role society assigns to him, Mason commits an act of indiscretion and suffers the worst consequences. What I really like about this story is how deftly Marsha Cornelius weaves through its enthralling plot, painting a world that is as real as it is visceral, and this makes A Tale of Moral Corruption a fantastically compelling read!
