N.G. Avant’s Hammer (Witchy Women Book 1) follows four modern women who discover that they are witches connected to a prophecy seeded by Nemesis, the goddess of retribution. Each one has elemental magic. Jane, the Salem-based scholar of the circle, believes their mission is to stop Heinrich Kramer before his anti-witch handbook, The Hammer of Witches, can help spread persecution across Europe. On the night of a blue moon, the women leave their own century and arrive in the Holy Roman Empire in 1485, where one printer can turn a manuscript into doctrine and church fear can turn suspicion into death. With the Daughters’ Chronicles as their guide, they search for a way to change history before Kramer’s book becomes a weapon against women who have no magic to defend themselves.
N.G. Avant’s Hammer (Witchy Women Book 1) is a fierce blend of urban fantasy and historical fantasy, and Avant sets this gorgeous story between modern witchcraft and late-medieval Germany. The best part is the Witchy Women themselves. I love it when female protagonists get angry with purpose, and Avant gives each woman a distinct reason for taking Kramer personally. Jane’s scholarship matters in the plot, especially at the Speyer print shop, where Peter Drach’s presses could make Kramer’s manuscript travel farther than any sermon. Gina is my favorite because her fire magic never replaces her firefighter instincts when panic enters the room. The historical setting is excellent too, especially Dorothea’s hidden protection of women in Speyer. Readers who enjoy feminist time-travel fantasy are in for a treat.
