A Tree’s Heart by Angelika Rust is an epic fantasy novel following Ash, a 22-year-old Tree – an elite soldier of the Joined Realm. Training since the age of 6 years old, Ash is unexpectedly forced into battle in a rebellion caused by the civilians he’s charged with protecting. Four years later he rises in rank to be the Prince’s Man, tasked with guarding the next heir to the throne. Very soon after his promotion, Ash is thrust back into the rebellion, and this time he faces an even bigger challenge. Does he trust what he’s always known and been taught, or does he question everything?

I really enjoyed A Tree’s Heart. There was a lot of plotting and scheming on each side to get the upper hand, and I had a lot of fun trying to come up with ideas and solutions with each character for what everyone’s next move could be. It didn't matter what side of the rebellion they were on. I also enjoyed reading the character growth of Ash and Prince Caradan, and their camaraderie as the story continued. Ash’s unwavering loyalty and desire to believe there was good on all sides made me fall in love with him. I especially loved how accepting and friendly he was with the people, especially the children, with mixed blood. It was precious to read those scenes, and I smiled throughout a lot of the book. I loved Angelika Rust’s descriptive writing style, and I found myself laughing at quite a few jokes and moments in the book, which is always a win.
