Adventures with Daddy at the Circus by Y.Y. Chan is an immersive and colorful children’s book. Illustrated by Pearly L., the story, set in a circus, comes alive with action. A little girl, Renee, whose father encourages her to perform a clown act with him tells the story. At first, Renee is nervous because she is afraid that she may forget her tricks. Later, she is uncomfortable in her clown costume. As Renee goes through a variety of emotions, her father counters each with a coping strategy. He asks her to count while breathing slowly to calm her down. Chan includes fun characters like a pair of elephants who paint portraits and two lions who need taming. There are questions at the end of the story for discussion.
Adventures with Daddy at the Circus by Y.Y. Chan is a whimsical and fantastic story. The illustrations are so vivid that the story seems animated. The situations are unique, immersive, and entertaining. What I appreciated most was that beneath the beautifully colored illustrations was an instruction manual of emotional coping techniques for kids. The unusual setting of a circus with distinctive characters caught my attention. Chan's talent for imagery in the writing is so good that I felt the itchy clown wig and butterflies in my stomach as I waited backstage, in anticipation of performing in front of the crowd. Fortunately, the book does not end with the last page, because there are questions to encourage conversations with your child about the plot, but also about feelings. This book is an entirely positive experience. Step right up to read the best story about feelings under one tent!
