Can a single letter change everything? That’s the question at the heart of All That Remains by Samantha Grosser. Eva and Ben have been married for decades, but they receive news that forces them to revisit a painful part of his past. The story alternates between 1998 and the years leading up to World War II, when they first meet. Eva’s brother Alex brought Ben to stay for the summer at his family's grand estate, Silverwood Hall. At first, they’re just friendly, but soon they become something more. Then things take an unexpected turn. Readers also discover old secrets, difficult choices, and the lasting effects of love and loss. Can the past ever truly stay behind us, or does it always find a way back?
The cover of All That Remains by Samantha Grosser immediately caught my attention. I wondered about the elegant-looking woman pictured there. And I’m glad I had the chance to find out about her. This book was more than a historical romance. It also explores family, regret, forgiveness, and life-changing decisions. Ben and Eva felt like real people. I became invested in both their younger and older selves. It’s not often that I choose the male lead over the female, but the way Grosser wrote Ben had me a little more drawn to his story than hers. I also enjoyed how the two timelines worked together, revealing just enough at a time to keep me wanting to know what happened next. Anyone interested in historical fiction, layered relationships, and stories that unfold over decades will want to pick this one up. It's the kind of novel that reminds us how the past never completely disappears, but it can still lead to understanding and hope.
