Jonathan Tessier is a career chef in Silver Valley, looking for his big break and a way to make it to celebrity status in Ambition to Savor. He’s spent years crafting his reputation behind the stylish front doors of his beloved Taverne, but all it takes is one scathing review and a spate of thefts to threaten everything. Jonathan trusts his head chef, Elenora, with the knowledge of his past and confesses his history as a Mercenary for a magical Union. The only way for him to save his restaurant is by collecting priceless ingredients from dangerous sources, finding the thieves, and wowing the critics. Elenora becomes his sidekick in a dangerous quest that almost gets them both killed. Just when Jonathan witnesses a victory with the critics and gets the Taverne back on track, an incredible offer comes his way. He’s given the chance to realize his dreams and join a fast track to success. Unfortunately, the offer is not what it seems and by placing his signature on this contract, Jonathan is signing his death warrant. Author B.B.E. Gwyn has crafted a cast of likable characters within a complex but relatable world for the reader to follow.
Throughout Ambition to Savor, there’s an underlying warning about lifelong career ladders and what happens when we reach the pinnacle of our dreams, only to realize we climbed the wrong ladder and it’s leaning against the wrong wall. There are many dramatic juxtapositions within the plot as Jonathan gets closer to his life’s goals, only to realize they have less importance than he believed. And the cost of seizing them fully will cause the loss of his humanity. The theme of this novel is ambition in all its various guises and the effect it has on the characters within a carefully constructed plot. In the extraordinary world that B.B.E. Gwyn has created, nothing is as it seems. Thieves are working inside Jonathan’s Taverne, and just beyond the safety of the city limits are unnatural monsters. I enjoyed the naivety of the main characters and their endearing innocence. Elenora is delightful, a light to Jonathan’s inherent darkness, while the critics are anathema to them all. There’s an intriguing sense of allegory in the writing, as though the author wishes the reader to see themselves in Jonathan and perhaps reevaluate before all is lost. This is a great read, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
