In Are Snowmen Real? by Janice Garden Macdonald, Donkey Otis finds a picture of a snowman and begins to wonder if they really exist. Poncho Lizard soon joins him, and they start their journey to discover the truth. Later on, they meet up with Jack Rabbit, who sets off across the desert in search of snow and explanations. They also encounter other animal pals who share their opinions on the subject and decide to join the quest for what is true. Their adventure is filled with playful moments and gentle questioning of what is authentic and what is imagined. As night falls, Otis gazes at the sparkling sky and finds beauty there. Will he ever find the answers he seeks, or is he doomed never to know? With a light touch, the book explores themes of belief, discovery, and friendship through imagination and reflection.

Are Snowmen Real? by Janice Garden Macdonald is an inventive tale that will have children thinking about the frosty figure in a whole new way. As an educator, I appreciate how creatively it delves into the question of whether or not they’re out there somewhere and encourages kids to discuss the topic with their friends. In a classroom environment, they can share their ideas with classmates and engage in follow-up activities, such as drawing how they envision their own snow buddy or writing a story to go with it. Teachers could also create a simple yes-or-no chart asking: “Are snowmen real?” Then each column could be tallied up to see which side has more. Young readers will undoubtedly love this picture book as much as I did, and it deserves a place in both home and school libraries.
