Baking for Keeps: The Bachelor Bake-Off Book 4 by Jessica Gilmore is the story of Lacey and Zac. Lacey craves security after spending much of her childhood being dragged from one place to another by her musician parents, so as a teenager she stops in Marietta with her aunt and, nearly a decade later, she’s still there. Zac, though, he’s had a pretty harsh childhood and his adult response is to always keep moving. He’s not much of a 'join the community' kind of guy and he’s completely fine with that. Jessica Gilmore did a good job of telling and showing who Lacey and Zac were, and keeping with that throughout the story. Along with the secondary characters, who were really fun, this is a solidly clean romance that takes place around the Bachelor Bake-Off.
Despite their differences in Baking for Keeps, Lacey and Zac were very similar and had the same problems. They simply went about achieving them differently, which was clear right from the beginning. The story itself was a good one, but Lacey and Zac weren’t particularly interesting characters and I felt their love story lacked chemistry, even as they spent time together learning to bake. I enjoyed the Bake-Off events, her eccentric aunt and the few interactions with the other bachelors a lot. Small town Marietta has a lot to offer and the author, Jessica Gilmore, painted a beautiful picture of the town, life in it, and all the different townspeople who lived there. For me, the romance was secondary to everything else, but with that being said, Baking for Keeps was a good read.
