A quiet summer vacation on the shores of Lake Ontario for the Bell family turns into quite an adventure when the children suspect something unusual going on at the old hermit’s cabin in Bells in the Fog: The Mystery of the Hermit's Cabin by E.B. Butler. Along with Katie, Sally and Rufus, some friends who join the Bells for the summer, Lanny, Rudge and Timmy Bell follow the strange activities taking place around the old cabin hidden back in the dunes. They hear ship’s bells in the dark as men unload a cruiser and transport boxes to the cabin. Toby, a young boy at the cabin, really wants to be friends with the other kids but his ‘Pop’ wants him to stay away from them and that only makes the Bells more curious. As the summer days move on, the mystery gets more involved until the children finally tell their father what has been happening. Will they discover that it was nothing or have they uncovered some kind of illegal plot?

Bells in the Fog: The Mystery of the Hermit's Cabin by E.B. Butler is a terrific story, perfect for students in grades 4 through 6 and even older. The characters are quite realistic and truly different from one another, just like real siblings. The action keeps you turning the pages as you follow the young investigators trying to get more information about what is happening at the cabin while they enjoy picnics, sailing and fishing at their summer home. The characters are realistic and the action is well paced. Appealing to both boys and girls, this story has something for everyone. Nicely done!
