Warrior Pose: Yoga Mat Mysteries is a spellbinding mystery by Susan Rogers and John Roosen. The story follows Ric Peters, whose life is at a crossroads, torn between his dreams of a future with Elaina and a job that makes him feel in a rut. Everything changes with a trip to New Zealand as they are pulled into a world of dangerous family secrets, and Ric faces accusations of a heinous crime back in Indonesia. How can he prove his innocence when a skull and toxic waste are discovered near his family’s home? But that is just the beginning of Ric’s woes as more bodies are found and the relationship with his father turns sour. A friend disappears, and yet another body makes everything personal, just as dangerous and powerful forces target Elaina. Can Ric help his friends thousands of miles away, and what about his love for Elaina?
Authors Susan Rogers and John Roosen offer a thriller packed with action and fully drawn, intriguing, and believable characters. The setting pulled me in, from Indonesia to the mountainous landscapes of New Zealand. What was most fascinating was the way the authors link the characters to the places they have been and the landscapes they navigate. The authors raised questions in my mind and made me wonder whether Ric was who he claimed to be. You are pulled from one clue to the next; the red herrings and cliffhangers make it impossible to stop listening. Warrior Pose has an intricate plot, strong conflict that drives the story in unexpected directions, and compelling characters.
The audiobook is narrated by Rupert Degas in a clear voice that captivates listeners. I enjoyed the way Degas allows the narrative to take effect on the reader: the pauses are timed, the pitch rises with corresponding emotions, and the dramatic moments are conveyed through the silences and the tone of his voice. It was a delight listening to this accomplished audiobook.
