Beyond a Veiled Reflection (Anachronistic Dimensions Book 2) by Christine Church takes us on a journey into a different dimension. Famous rock star Dane and his beautiful wife, Meirah, are from two totally different worlds and yet their love has transcended time, incarnations and differing dimensions. After Dane and Meirah were first finally united in the dimension of Mikaire, life as husband and wife on Earth has been wonderful. But, danger lurks in the form of someone they thought was long gone and destroyed. Meirah’s former betrothed, Kaeplan, is still alive and still planning to have Meirah as his queen and bride in his newly created dimension of Almareyah. It is the drinking of Dane’s blood that can give Kaeplan unlimited wizardly powers to change time, to change dimensions and to ensure Meirah’s obedience and subservience to him. Dane and Meirah are in a race against time to defeat Kaeplan before he succeeds in his evil intent.

Although Beyond a Veiled Reflection (Anachronistic Dimensions Book 2) is the second book in this series, it stands alone and you definitely do not have to read the first story to enjoy the second. Author Christine Church does a superb job of dropping in relevant information to allow you to understand how the characters ended up where they are. A cross between science fiction and fantasy, this story captured my imagination from the very beginning. I found the idea of an eternal love that crosses time, lives, and dimensions immensely appealing and in this author’s skilled hands it's an excellent and satisfying story. The three main characters were all sharply drawn almost to the point of caricature; the self-indulgent, slightly destructive rock star; the evil and heartless wizard; and, of course, the beautiful woman who would not let go of a love that had spanned generations and dimensions. Yet, the author still managed to skilfully weave a wonderful story full of excitement, action, and heart-felt romance. The litmus test for any story in a series is “would I read the next instalment?” In the case of this book, the answer is a resounding YES! This is a great read and one I highly recommend to fans of the genre.

Meirah was trying, she had studied Scottish culture, those who spoke with accents closest to her own alternative dimension dialect. She had adapted, evolved, all in the name of her love for Dane. But he was conflicted; he loved her, but he loved the new peace he was being granted when intoxicated, the closest to heaven he could imagine being. Peace, women, and sex. He had his vices, brought about by his rock star life, but Meirah too had a weakness she couldn't shake. Where Dane stood, she wished it had been her knight, Sir Kori, a previous incarnation of her lover, and her current state of mind was making the call of human blood almost impossible to ignore. A reflection in the water warns of the return of a danger thought past, and a betrayal leaves Meirah more vulnerable than ever. Will she come to her senses and see the truth, or will her recent heartbreak leave her open to manipulation?

Beyond a Veiled Reflection is the second book in Christine Church's Anachronistic Dimensions urban fantasy series. With clearly labelled alternating perspectives from the main characters, Meirah, Dane, Kaeplan and Caitlyn, it is easy to get insight into their personalities, thinking, and motivations. Nothing is certain, and danger and depravity are paramount. Betrayal, heartache, manipulation, and dangerous revelations will keep you turning the pages of this unique novel. While vampirism is central, the author introduces an alternative mythos which I have only seen a handful of times, and it has been well implemented with some unique interesting alterations. A good read, with some brutal physical and emotional scenes.
