Liam Kincaid’s Operation Lockdown follows Birn “Books” Tylandine and the young agents of the Bayside Insurgents after Fellstone City is sealed under an Imperial lockdown. Books lives inside the Labor Compound with his friends Cheff, Mid, Sable, Lery, and Buttons, a group recently recruited into the Fellstone Resistance Movement after proving themselves on an earlier mission. Their first official assignment arrives when salvage operator Zeek Bonnovus hires them to help dismantle a wrecked freighter at Shipwreck Point. The job gives them a legitimate reason to leave the compound, but it hides another purpose. An FRM courier is approaching Fellstone without knowing that the roads into the city are being watched, and the BSI must reach him before Imperial patrols discover why he has come. Getting there requires secrecy inside a city watching everyone.

Liam Kincaid’s Operation Lockdown is brilliant science fiction, with a young resistance team that is as capable as it is endearing. Sable is my favorite, with her hand-drawn compass map showing exactly why the others depend on her once the BSI reaches unfamiliar country. Mid is great fun with his Amazing Voice Changer, a small invention that fits naturally into the group’s resourcefulness. The world-building is equally impressive, from Meltern’s Guest House, where model ships and maritime relics fill the dining room, to the reed canoes that skim through hidden marsh waterways. Daniel Wood’s atmospheric digital illustrations are gorgeous, especially the standout Undersea Club image, where its enormous shell-shaped stage emerges from the darkness beneath warm lamplight. Well written and imaginative, readers who enjoy young resistance heroes will adore this book.
