Beyond by Ruth C. Mitchell is a contemporary romance novel with paranormal undertones. Renowned fantasy fiction author Laura Haskell lives in the haunted Crescent Hotel - a place she inherited from her deceased grandmother - with her faithful German shepherd, Cloud. Struggling with alcohol and unable to finish her latest novel, Laura's life takes an unexpected turn when her publisher introduces her to a well-known paranormal researcher named Sean Wilson. Sean has recently discovered a scientifically proven way to witness apparitions in their natural state. Using the latest technology, Sean helps Laura discern the identity of her grandfather. After learning her grandmother's inspirational life story, Laura discovers a newfound love for life and is determined to maintain sobriety. Can she and Sean live happily ever after?

Beyond is a unique take on paranormal phenomena that is guaranteed to appeal to ghost enthusiasts. Author Ruth C. Mitchell tells an absorbing tale of an alcoholic author struggling to put her baggage behind her when unforeseen circumstances and people change her life's trajectory. Although sprinkled with paranormal incidents throughout the narrative, Beyond primarily feels like a love story. This is a character-driven story, and as such, the pacing is a bit slow. Laura's character arc is captivating to read, and her relationships with her friends, family, and dog provide the narrative thrust for the story. I adored the dynamic between Laura, Cloud, and Sean. The climax was bittersweet yet satisfying nonetheless. If you're looking for a contemporary romance novel with a touch of the paranormal, check out Beyond.
