The Battle for the Market of Kenai by D.K. Ward follows eight-year-old Keaton, whose peaceful life on a farm near a fortified trading settlement begins to change when he discovers he can produce ice with his hands. In a land where extraordinary abilities are considered gifts from God, his parents believe the boy needs training before he can use his power wisely. Keaton joins the local Army and makes friends with another recruit named Typhoon, and both press on in their training to defend the people of Kenai. Keaton's little sister Colleen has an unusual gift of her own, and she's also pulled into adventures that reach beyond the family farm. As danger spreads through the surrounding countryside, Keaton must discover what it means to serve God when the prospect of real combat becomes glaringly apparent.

The Battle for the Market of Kenai by D.K. Ward is a children's fantasy in a world that's filled with extraordinary gifts that feel right at home in the characters' everyday lives. The biblical teachings are presented naturally through the story, and I particularly enjoyed the archery competition, where Keaton remembers his father's explanation of sin through missing the bullseye. What I love most is Colleen’s place in the adventure. Her gift for speaking with animals gives her an important role in the family's affairs, especially when she sends her silver falcon to investigate a lead concerning her father's stolen bicycle. I loved that her contribution could make such a difference to the family's search. Well written and immersive, this is a lovely children's adventure with a heartening Christian message, and I look forward to wherever the series takes us next.

D.K. Ward’s The Battle for the Market of Kenai is a wonderful children’s fantasy that pulls you right into a world of faith and adventure. The story centers on 8-year-old Keaton and his sister, Colleen, who live in a frontier farming realm called Kasala. Everything changes when Keaton realizes he can actually manipulate ice with his bare hands, leading him to enroll in specialized army training. There, he practices alongside Typhoon, a young man who can control the wind. Things turn dangerous very quickly when a rival army arrives from Palmer to capture their community trading post. Keaton is forced to use his freezing powers and the help of a loyal Arctic wolf to defend his home against invisible floating ghosts that are controlling the enemy’s minds. The town faces a scary night attack with incoming fireballs, forcing everyone to hold their shields up against the flames. Can Keaton hold his ground when the final assault begins?

If you have early readers in your house who love action-packed fantasy stories, you should add D.K. Ward’s The Battle for the Market of Kenai to their reading list. What makes this children’s adventure so engaging is the lively pace that keeps readers invested in the storyline. The personal growth we see in young Keaton is simply spectacular, especially the way he learns to manage his overconfidence and embrace responsibility during his training drills. The author establishes a memorable homestead backdrop, combining old-fashioned farm life and glowing torches with fantastic supernatural abilities. Ward’s prose is evocative and easy to follow, ensuring the story remains crystal clear for younger audiences without ever coming across as patronizing or complex. The conflict escalates in a very intriguing way, moving from basic training sessions straight into a large, coordinated village defense at the creek. The themes of unearned grace and divine gifts are woven into the action beautifully. It’s a great book for elementary-aged children who want a magical adventure with a strong Christian foundation.

In the children’s fantasy novel, The Battle for the Market of Kenai: The Chronicles of Keaton and Colleen (Book One) by D.K. Ward, a boy discovers he has unique abilities, and he must learn how to wield them for good. Keaton and his younger sister, Colleen, live in a world where God gives every gift and supplies every need immediately, provided his children pay attention and accept the gift from their creator. When his abilities begin to show, Keaton learns he can use his gifts for his own glory, or surrender his gifts to his Savior to be used as an instrument. But while training, a battle against a “darkness” begins, and Keaton must make choices and live with the consequences. Will Keaton bow to temptation, or will he use his gift to fight for his Lord?

Choices and actions have consequences in D.K. Ward’s The Battle for the Market of Kenai. The novel is a light read, with a short reflection section at the end of each chapter, which could be excellent as discussion material for a book club or for solo contemplation. The plot is light and easily digestible, and the characters are uncomplicated and straightforward, perfect for any young reader. The magic is explained as God’s gifts, unique to their world, and the settings are engaging and reminiscent of Alaska. Although there are a few battles throughout the story, parents will appreciate that the fight scenes are not excessively violent or overly graphic for younger readers.
