Big Mikey is the fourth book in the Marla Mesconti Mystery Series by Cher Griffin. When Lexie discovered a beautiful but injured horse without its rider, she knew she had to do something. She cleaned him up, gave him some food, and reported it to her superior. However, she was not expecting the sheriff to find a bloody riding shirt. The search for the rider began. When Hilda found out her friend Janet was missing, she could not stay behind the scenes. So, Marla and co. packed their bags and traveled to Aiken, South Carolina to find Janet. However, things took a mysterious turn when they found unexplainable clues. The FBI was brought in, Rick arrived to help with finding Janet, but there were far too many suspicious people in Aiken who could be responsible for Janet’s disappearance. Can Marla and Rick find out where Janet disappeared? Or was it already too late for her?

Although this was the first novel I read in this series, I had zero issues connecting with the characters. There was a whole bunch of characters and that could have been a little confusing, but somehow it wasn’t. I enjoyed how Lexie was introduced and how she played an integral part in the story. Her connection with Big Mikey was heartwarming and very well-executed. Another well-executed element was the mystery behind Janet’s disappearance and suspicious circumstances. The tension was running high from the moment Big Mikey appears alone and injured. I had my suspicions about who could have been behind it all, but boy was I wrong. I was definitely not expecting that. Marla was incredibly smart about the whole situation. She and Rick made a solid team that worked together like a well-oiled machine to solve the mystery. It was executed well; the characters were well-rounded and the plot moved at a steady pace. A must-read novel for mystery enthusiasts!
