Borealis is an engrossing eco-thriller novel by Bill Bennett. The Crystal Cove case took a lot from Detective Ava Martinez. She arrives in Alaska hoping to recuperate. However, with the Apexion Oil & Gas Summit at Westmark, tensions are high as corporate and geopolitical interests clash. Meanwhile, people are disappearing without a trace. Ava and Cole Stratton from Stratton Energy Solutions uncover a deeper conspiracy involving Arctic anomalies, which may have far-reaching consequences. On the trail of a missing whistleblower, Ava and Cole know they are being watched, and not just by the Feds, but also by someone far more sinister. While they team up with unexpected allies to protect the land, their enemies seek to weaponize something they don't fully understand.
Bill Bennett has written a gripping tale laced with suspense and intrigue. Blending sleuth mystery with supernatural and thriller elements, Bennett underlines the narrative with a sense of dread and tension that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very last pages. Borealis is atmospheric, mysterious, and fast-paced from beginning to end. Each twist and turn unveils a new layer of mystery, which makes the plot very unpredictable. You're never sure if your favorite characters will survive by the end of the story. This unpredictability raises the stakes even higher and makes the book an absolute page-turner. Ava and Cole are a dynamic duo who work together very well and are easy to like and root for. Among the secondary characters, I loved Keller and Raven. All in all, fans of eco-thrillers will love this book.
