Born to Run, Live to Be Free by Daris Howard is a delightful, awe-inspiring novel of the pursuit of freedom. Tom Johnson is a married, young, struggling college student. He never suspected the turn his life would take by becoming a caretaker for a “spirited race horse.” The story of Cashmere and Tom is heartbreaking and inspirational. Cashmere is a German-bred race horse. After winning his first race, he is sold to a renowned movie star. This beautiful race horse becomes trapped in a stall, never allowed to run. After being abused and neglected for 15 years, Cashmere is rescued, and sold for a meager $1500. Upon arriving in Utah, Tom and Cashmere become the best of friends. Set out to pasture, Cashmere runs, never tiring. Feeling trapped by his own circumstances, Tom wonders “what it would feel like to really be free.” The unique bond of friendship between man and horse changes both of their lives forever.

Daris Howard is a wonderful storyteller. Born to Run, Live to Be Free reveals the longing to be free. Howard takes you into his setting by vividly writing scenery of Utah, California and Germany. His characters are real, and after reading Born to Run, Live to Be Free I feel like I can call each of them friend. Being around horses for over twenty years myself, I enjoyed Howard’s ability to depict the mind, personality and thoughts of Cashmere. Moreover, the expertise portrayed in the bond between horse and caregiver was exceptional. Howard wrote many insightful truths regarding the desire hidden within us all. One of my favorites is “Liberty is a person’s ability to come and go as they choose. But freedom goes much deeper and comes from within.” Born to Run, Live to Be Free is a gem of a read, one that has found its place in my book treasury.
