Broken Time by Athena Stamelou follows Noemi, a bounty hunter living in a false reality created after High Priestess Minerva helps Hell destroy time. Fallen angel Uriel recruits Noemi to find Ramiel, a psychic who can restore the memories erased when the new reality replaces the old one. As Noemi begins to remember who she was, she learns that the key to repairing time lies with Novah, the last Time Lord, who remains unconscious while the remaining power of time builds inside him. Minerva controls the broken world as its universe slowly dies, leaving Noemi and her scattered allies to reunite before Hell can secure its hold. Their path leads toward Eurilia, the birthplace of time, where the fate of the frozen universe depends on what they uncover.
In Athena Stamelou’s Broken Time, ambitious Christian speculative fantasy meets soft science fiction as the author makes its strangest ideas belong together. Astrid’s Frequency Alternator and Dimension Phasing Device proves that approach by giving the displaced scientist technology that transfers objects between realities. The same inventiveness appears in Amora, a former princess who remembers two versions of her life after reality is rewritten. That willingness to make abstract ideas concrete extends into Christian cosmology, where Lucifer appears as Christian tradition describes him, a former angel turned Devil who commands Hell against Heaven ruled by God. Once the spiritual world is established, the author quickens the pacing when the witch Raven learns that a ritual to summon the being who governs time needs three kinds of magician, so she calls on ancestor Nimue to fill one role. Readers of The Bounty Hunter series will be over the moon with this finale. Very highly recommended.
