Cape Con tells the true story of Aster Amelia, a daughter who decided to come home and care for her father, ending 20 years of estrangement. Aster was known as the daughter who abandoned her mother while she was dying, when it was actually orchestrated to look that way by her dad. Ironically, Aster was the only family member by her father’s deathbed. She recounts the shock of realizing that the people she thought cared for her dad were only really after his money. Even the ex who’d dumped her father returned for his car. But perhaps the most disturbing part is the abuse her dad suffered at the hands of those Aster entrusted him to. Elderly abuse is real, and Aster emphasizes this, listing the many things you need to look out for when checking your elderly person into a home.
It is a bitter pill to swallow when your parents choose your ex-husband over you and file an 8-page affidavit as to why he should get custodial rights instead. Aster Amelia’s family showed narcissistic traits, and I can’t imagine her frustration, hurt, and anger at all the lies they told for 20 years. Authentic and consistent, Aster provides readers with evidence that disproves every lie that was told against her, including those told by her father’s attorney. She gives a respectful account of what she went through, never referring to her transgressors by anything other than their names, a decision they could’ve benefited from, especially a paternal aunt with an incredibly mean, vindictive spirit. What I loved about Aster is her compassionate and empathetic nature. Despite everything her family put her through, she still showed up. I loved that she and her father could mend their relationship and move forward. Cape Con is Aster's truth.
