In Alex Andre’s Zero-Day Souls, Zachariah “Zack” Cole designs virtual avatars in NorAm, a future American state where personal scores determine every citizen’s opportunities under the watchful Ministry of Consumer Satisfaction. Zack has always accepted the conveniences of this society, until an ordinary morning begins repeating in impossible ways. His search for an explanation brings him into contact with people whose knowledge of the Ministry threatens everything he once believed about his own life. The mystery gradually extends beyond his memories into a secret government research program whose reach may be far greater than anyone suspects. As Zack ventures into unfamiliar corners of NorAm, he encounters communities whose lives are shaped by the social boundaries he once accepted. His decisions could alter the futures of people who have lived for years under the Ministry’s watch.

Alex Andre’s Zero-Day Souls is a really well-executed science-fiction novel. Zack is a protagonist we want to root for as independence tests the loyalties that shaped his life. NorAm’s surveillance is tangible through its people, like Wez Rourke, a researcher whose investigation of unusual simulation records leads him toward Zack, then gives Zack’s changing loyalties an intimate edge through Naomi, a programmer who risks her safety to help him find a way out. The extraordinary telling of Zack’s life among NorAm’s HardOps broadens the book beautifully. His work alongside Tig’s crew as they maintain NorAm’s vast towers makes the Blossoms instantly believable. NorAm’s politics emerge just as sharply through visual scenes like a masked recruiter crossing a deserted parking lot while an armed watcher waits hidden in bushes. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy intelligent science fiction will adore this.
