The Iron Vault by S.F. Baumgartner introduces readers to a high-stakes suspense story starring Navy Lieutenant Eli Mercer and forensic investigator Rosalie Tanaka. They’re brought together by a search for the truth behind the Blackwater offshore rig explosion, a disaster Eli needs to solve to clear his father’s name. Their only lead is a suppressed records package labeled K-402, which exposes a corporate cover-up involving hidden financial files meant to erase disaster victims from history. The hunt takes them across Puget Sound as they track transport vehicles to find a master ledger hidden deep inside a dry-docked freighter. But as corporate enemies use arson and flooding to destroy the evidence, Eli and Rosalie race against a strict Friday deadline. Will they be able to authenticate the archive before the truth is lost for good?

S.F. Baumgartner’s action-adventure thriller, The Iron Vault, is a captivating read that balances an exciting plot with excellent character development. The Pacific Northwest backdrop really comes alive through the very descriptive writing, making every scene where Eli and Rosalie look for buried records dangerous and atmospheric. The slow-burn romance building between the two investigators is beautifully done, providing a perfect counterweight to the intense sabotage happening around them. Watching them piece together hidden institutional ledgers highlights themes of justice and holding corporate leaders accountable for forgotten workers. Baumgartner does a great job of mixing procedural financial digging with heart-pounding moments of survival, creating an immersive read. Anyone who’s looking for an intelligent, exciting thriller with a well-planned mystery should read this book.

S.F. Baumgartner’s The Iron Vault opens with a tragedy that has haunted Blackwater for twenty-six years. An offshore rig explosion claimed the lives of seventeen men, including Navy Lieutenant Eli Mercer’s father, Tom Mercer. Although the victims’ families received compensation, troubling questions remain about how the settlement money was handled. Eli wants to clear his father's name and partner up with Rosalie Tanaka, a forensic financial investigator. Eli and Rosalie's investigation leads them to an archive containing evidence. This evidence somehow survived for more than two decades. Eli and Rosalie are racing against time to locate, authenticate, and release the evidence. Eli and Rosalie find that someone is erasing the historical trail and wants the Blackwater evidence to disappear forever. The deeper they dig, the more dangerous their search becomes.

The Iron Vault by S.F. Baumgartner had me hooked from the first page until the last. Eli wants to clear his father's name, and Rosalie has a special skill set to help with the investigation. Together, they worked well as a team. The writing was engaging, and I felt part of the investigation. It was difficult to put the book down. I could not turn the pages fast enough; I had to know what would happen next. The pacing was steady and everything fitted together like a puzzle. I tried to predict what would happen next, but was wrong every time. The book was brilliantly written and has all the elements to be a success. The book was much more than I expected.

S.F. Baumgartner brings readers the third book in The Mercer Files trilogy with The Iron Vault. Eli Mercer is a Navy lieutenant who wants to clear his father, Tom Mercer, of the Blackwater conspiracy. But time is running out, and Eli, along with forensic financial investigator Rosalie Tanaka, must release the archive evidence soon. Twenty-six years ago, Tom died in an offshore rig explosion in Blackwater. Now, someone is determined to make sure the evidence doesn't get to the authorities. Eli and Rosalie face all sorts of challenges before reaching the Iron Vault. Gathering the necessary evidence isn't that easy. Securing the ledger and the drive comes at the cost of facing fire and flood. Meanwhile, the Callahan family claim remains frozen.

The Iron Vault is part sleuth mystery and part procedural drama novel. For me, S.F. Baumgartner's ability to keep the stakes high and the reader immersed throughout all the twists and turns was one of the book's key highlights. The narrative's grounded tone and realistic characters also add to the charm and keep things interesting. Reading the novel feels like watching an episode of an investigative drama on TV. I was also impressed by the plot's pacing. There are a few timely surprises, and despite the large cast, Baumgartner makes sure each of them leaves their mark on the reader. Eli and Rosalie make a dynamic duo, and I found myself invested in their relationship. Overall, I feel this would be a good choice for readers who enjoy well-written sleuth mysteries and conspiracy tales.
